Setting Up WeChat as a Foreigner in China
The verification catch nobody warns you about β and how to get past it before you land.

The short version
Download WeChat. Sign up with your phone number. Then you'll be stuck β new accounts need verification from an existing WeChat user who has been active for 6+ months. Find someone to verify you BEFORE you arrive in China. Once verified, add your card for WeChat Pay.
Why you can't skip WeChat
WeChat isn't just a chat app. In China, it's the operating system for daily life:
- Communication: Nobody uses SMS or email for personal communication. Your hotel, your colleagues, your friends β all on WeChat.
- Payments: WeChat Pay works everywhere Alipay works. Some vendors ONLY accept WeChat Pay.
- Mini-programs: Thousands of apps-within-WeChat β restaurant ordering, bike rental, train tickets, government services, event registrations.
- QR code menus: Many restaurants only have a WeChat QR code menu β scan it, order, pay. No WeChat = no food.
- Groups: Event info, apartment listings, buy/sell groups, expat communities β all organized in WeChat groups.
Not having WeChat in China is like not having a phone number in other countries. You can survive without it, but everything is 10x harder.
Step 1: Download and register
Download "WeChat" from your app store (green icon, two chat bubbles). Sign up with your international phone number β it works, you'll get an SMS code.
Choose your name and profile photo carefully β in China, people judge you by your WeChat profile the same way Westerners judge by Instagram. Use your real name (or a recognizable nickname) and a decent photo.
Step 2: The verification nightmare (and how to solve it)
After registration, you'll hit a wall. WeChat requires your account to be "verified" by an existing user. This person must:
- Have a WeChat account active for 6+ months
- Have their real-name ID verified on WeChat
- Not have verified anyone else in the past month
How to find a verifier:
Best option: Ask a Chinese friend, colleague, or classmate. They scan your QR code in their WeChat app β done in 30 seconds.
No Chinese contacts? Ask your hotel front desk when you arrive. Most hotel staff have WeChat and are willing to help β tip Β₯20 if they seem hesitant.
Still stuck? Post on Reddit r/chinalife or the "Foreigners in Beijing/Shanghai" Facebook groups. Someone will usually help within hours.
Before your trip: If you know ANYONE who has WeChat β a friend who visited China, a Chinese international student, anyone β ask them now. Do this before you fly.
This verification step is the single most common blocker for foreigners. WeChat added it to prevent spam accounts, but it catches every legitimate new user too.
Step 3: Set up WeChat Pay
Once verified, add your payment card:
- Go to "Me" β "Services" β "Wallet"
- Tap "Cards" β add your Visa or Mastercard
- Complete identity verification with your passport (photo + selfie)
WeChat Pay works the same as Alipay β scan QR codes to pay, or show your payment code to be scanned. Having both Alipay and WeChat Pay means you're covered everywhere.
Spending limits: Same as Alipay Tour Pass β foreign cards have annual limits. For long-term stays, link a Chinese bank account to remove the cap.

Mini-programs (ε°η¨εΊ) are apps that run inside WeChat. No download needed. There are millions of them. The ones you'll use:
- Didi β call a ride without downloading the Didi app
- Meituan β food delivery
- 12306 β train tickets
- Mobike/Hellobike β bike rental (scan the QR code on any shared bike)
- Restaurant menus β scan the QR code on the table, the menu loads as a mini-program
To find a mini-program: pull down on the WeChat home screen, or search for it in the search bar. Most QR codes you encounter in daily life open mini-programs.
WeChat groups to join
Ask around for these β they're invite-only (someone shares a QR code):
- Your city's expat community group (e.g., "Foreigners in Beijing")
- Your university/company group
- Neighborhood buy/sell groups
- Event and nightlife groups (this is how you hear about parties, Zhaodai events, etc.)
Groups max out at 500 members and QR codes expire after 7 days. If you can't join, ask someone in the group to invite you directly.
Privacy and what WeChat sees
Be aware: WeChat is subject to Chinese law. Messages are not end-to-end encrypted. The Chinese government can theoretically access your conversations. For sensitive communications, use iMessage or Signal (via VPN).
For daily life β ordering food, chatting with friends about restaurants, planning trips β WeChat is fine. Just don't use it for anything you wouldn't want a stranger to read.
FAQ
Can I use WeChat outside China?+
Yes. WeChat works worldwide. You can message people, use video calls, and access your wallet from anywhere. Some mini-programs are China-only.
Do I need a Chinese phone number?+
No. International numbers work for registration. But some mini-programs and services require a Chinese number. If you're staying long-term, get a local SIM.
What if my account gets blocked?+
WeChat occasionally blocks new foreign accounts for "suspicious activity" (usually triggered by using a VPN during registration). You'll need someone to verify you again. Avoid using a VPN when first setting up WeChat.
Can I use WeChat Pay without verification?+
No. You need both account verification (from another user) and identity verification (passport + card) to use WeChat Pay.
