Google Maps is blocked. Apple Maps is limited. Here's what actually works.

The short version
Download Gaode Maps (ι«εΎ·ε°εΎ). It's China's Google Maps β 700 million users, most accurate data, best transit routing. Apple Maps works as a backup but has less detail. Google Maps is blocked and even with a VPN gives inaccurate location data in China due to GPS offset.
Why Google Maps doesn't work (even with VPN)
Even if you connect through a VPN and open Google Maps, you'll notice something weird: your blue dot is 100-500 meters off from where you actually are. Buildings are shifted. Walking directions route you through walls.
This isn't a bug. China uses a different coordinate system called GCJ-02 (colloquially called "Mars coordinates"). Google Maps uses WGS-84 (the international standard). The deliberate offset makes Google Maps unreliable even when accessible. Chinese map apps (Gaode, Baidu) use GCJ-02 natively, so they're accurate.
Bottom line: Don't rely on Google Maps in China. It will get you lost.
Gaode Maps (Amap) β the best option
Gaode (ι«εΎ·ε°εΎ, also known as Amap internationally) is what locals use. It has:
- Accurate walking directions β actually follows sidewalks and pedestrian paths
- Real-time transit β live bus/subway arrival times, transfer suggestions, walking time to station
- Traffic data β real-time congestion, speed cameras, route alternatives
- Indoor navigation β mall floor plans, airport terminals, train station layouts
- Built-in ride-hailing β aggregates Didi and other services, sometimes finds cheaper rides
- POI data β restaurant hours, phone numbers, photos, reviews
The language issue: The app is in Chinese. There's no full English version. But:
- You CAN search in English β type "Starbucks" or "Beijing Airport" and it finds them
- Pinyin works β "wudaokou" finds δΊιε£
- Street names show pinyin alongside Chinese characters
- Transit directions show line numbers and station names in both Chinese and pinyin
For the first day it feels overwhelming. By day 3 you'll navigate it by muscle memory.
Apple Maps β the backup
Apple Maps works in China without a VPN and uses correct Chinese coordinates. It's the easiest option for iPhone users because it's already installed.
What it does well:
- Walking directions are accurate
- English interface
- Integrates with Didi for ride-hailing
- Look Around (China's version of Street View) in major cities
What it's missing vs Gaode:
- Transit routing is incomplete β often suggests weird transfers or misses faster routes
- No real-time bus arrival times
- Far fewer POIs (businesses, restaurants)
- No indoor navigation
- Bike and scooter routing is nonexistent
Verdict: Use Apple Maps when you just need quick walking directions. Use Gaode for transit, searching for businesses, or anything complex.
Baidu Maps β the alternative
Baidu Maps (ηΎεΊ¦ε°εΎ) is Gaode's main competitor. Same accuracy, similar features. Some people prefer it. The differences:
- Baidu has better street-level imagery (their version of Street View)
- Gaode has cleaner UI and slightly better transit data
- Baidu integrates better with Baidu search; Gaode integrates better with Alipay
Pick one and stick with it. Most expats use Gaode.

Sharing locations: When someone sends you an address in Chinese, copy it and paste it into Gaode's search bar. Works every time. If someone sends you a Gaode link, tap it β it opens the app directly with the location.
Offline maps: Download offline maps for your city in Gaode before you need them. Go to settings β offline maps β download your city. Saved my life in basement restaurants with no signal.
Screenshots: Screenshot your destination's Chinese name and address from Gaode. Show it to taxi drivers, hotel staff, or anyone giving you directions. This is more useful than trying to pronounce the name.
Transit cards on your phone: Add a transit card to Apple Wallet (iPhone) or use the Alipay transit mini-program. Tap your phone on the subway turnstile β no need to buy single-ride tickets.
"Take me here" in Chinese: If you're in a taxi without Didi and need to explain your destination, show the driver the Gaode map screen with the destination pinned. Point at it and say "ε»θΏι" (qΓΉ zhΓ¨lΗ β "go here").
FAQ
Does Waze work in China?+
No. Waze is owned by Google and is blocked in China. Use Gaode Maps for driving navigation β it has real-time traffic, speed cameras, and route alternatives.
Can I use offline maps?+
Yes. Both Gaode and Baidu Maps support offline map downloads. Download your city's map before you need it β essential for underground areas with no signal.
How do I find my current location in Chinese?+
Open Gaode Maps β your current location address is shown at the top in Chinese characters. Screenshot it to share with anyone. You can also tap "share location" to send a link via WeChat.
Why is my GPS offset in China?+
China uses the GCJ-02 coordinate system, which adds a deliberate offset to GPS coordinates. International apps using WGS-84 (Google Maps, some hiking apps) show your position 50-500m from where you actually are. Chinese apps handle this natively.
