The short version
Most Hollywood movies release in China β sometimes on the same day, sometimes weeks later. Cinemas show both dubbed (ι ι³η) and original version with Chinese subtitles (εη/θ±θ―). You want the original version. Not every cinema or showtime offers it.
Book on Maoyan (η«ηΌ) or Taopiaopiao (ζ·η₯¨η₯¨, inside Alipay). Filter for θ±θ― (English) or εη (original version). IMAX screens almost always show original audio.
How to find English-language showtimes
This is the part that trips everyone up. Chinese ticketing apps don't have an "English language" filter. You have to know what to look for.
On Maoyan (η«ηΌ):
- Open the app β tap η΅ε½± (Movies) β select the movie
- Look at the showtime details β it will say either θ±θ― (English) or ε½θ― (Chinese dub)
- IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and CINITY screens are almost always in English with Chinese subtitles
- Regular screens vary β some show dubbed, some original. Check each showtime
On Taopiaopiao (ζ·η₯¨η₯¨):
- Open Alipay β search "ζ·η₯¨η₯¨" β find your movie
- Same deal β look for θ±θ― in the showtime details
The cheat code: Book IMAX or Dolby showings. They're virtually always in original language. A standard IMAX ticket costs Β₯80-120 ($11-16) β more than regular screenings (Β₯40-60) but guaranteed English audio.

What movies are available in China
China allows approximately 40-50 foreign films per year through its import quota (called the "revenue-sharing" model). Most major Hollywood blockbusters make it β Marvel, DC, Pixar, Nolan, big action franchises. What you won't find:
- Horror movies β heavily restricted. Most Western horror films don't get a China release.
- Movies with LGBTQ+ themes β usually not approved by censors.
- Politically sensitive content β anything critical of China, Tibet, Taiwan, etc.
- Some R-rated films β China doesn't have a rating system, so very violent or sexual content gets either edited or blocked entirely.
For the films that do release, sometimes scenes are cut (usually 30 seconds to a few minutes). You won't notice unless you've seen the uncensored version.
Release dates: Sometimes same-day as the US, sometimes 2-6 weeks later. Occasionally months later. Follow Chinese film news (Mtime, Douban) to check release dates.

What to expect at a Chinese cinema
Mostly the same as anywhere else, with a few differences:
- Assigned seating: Every ticket has a specific seat number. No need to arrive early to grab a good spot β just book the seat you want on the app.
- No previews: Chinese cinemas show zero or minimal trailers. The movie starts within 5 minutes of the listed time. Don't show up "fashionably late."
- Phone screens everywhere: People check their phones during the movie. It's culturally normal and you'll just have to accept it.
- Food: Popcorn and drinks at the counter, same as anywhere. You can also bring in outside food β nobody checks.
- Subtitles: English movies have Chinese subtitles. Chinese movies do NOT have English subtitles (except at rare "English subtitle" special screenings).
FAQ
Can I watch Netflix or Disney+ in China?+
No β both are blocked by the Great Firewall. With a VPN you can access them, but streaming quality depends on your VPN speed. For cinema-quality viewing, go to a theater.
Are Chinese movies shown with English subtitles?+
Almost never. A few art cinemas occasionally screen Chinese films with English subtitles, but this is rare. For Chinese movies, you need to understand Chinese or wait for the international release.
How do I know if a showing is dubbed or original?+
Look for θ±θ― (English) or εη (original version) in the showtime details on Maoyan or Taopiaopiao. ε½θ―ι ι³ means Chinese dubbed. IMAX and Dolby screens are almost always original language.
Can I book tickets with a foreign credit card?+
Not directly on Maoyan or Taopiaopiao β they require Alipay or WeChat Pay. Set up Alipay first (see our payments guide), then book tickets through the Taopiaopiao mini-program inside Alipay.
